Ms. Daw Khun (Nu) Shwe

Daw Khun Shwe (a.k.a. Nu Shwe) grew up across the various parts of Chin Hills. After meeting Pa Mang at Yangon University, she started working for the Chin State Cooperative Department.

In 1998, Nu Shwe co-founded YOYAMAY with her husband Pa Mang, a family business that produces tradition-inspired contemporary designs and various ethnographic textiles. Her life experiences became the foundation for YOYAMAY’s success.

Now in Yangon, Myanmar, Nu Shwe dyes cotton naturally with indigo leaves. She also commissions new textiles and designs for YOYAMAY from weavers who have fled the war from the borderlands. In her free time, Nu Shwe creates contemporary tribal jewellery.

Within the past two decades, YOYAMAY has worked with over 200 weavers. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, YOYAMAY played a pivotal role in nurturing and promoting traditional weaving techniques among the Chin people.

Since 2013, YOYAMAY began introducing Chin textile products to the world by participating in the International Folk Art Market (Santa Fe). In 2023, Nu Shwe and Pa Mang organized a Chin Textiles Exhibition called ‘Ki-Tui-Ton (Together with Others): Collected Chin Textiles from Three Countries’ at Kalm Village in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Most recently in 2024, Nu Shwe participated in Texworld Paris 2024 as the main representative for YOYAMAY.
